Save Money on Flights: How to Get the Best Deals on Plane Tickets

Going on a vacation or lengthy business trip soon?

Planning for accommodations, dining, and entertainment is an exhausting ordeal but nothing is as taxing as booking a flight. Flights are some of the most expensive parts of any trip and it can be a hassle to book one too.

The good news is there are ways to save money on flights. Wait, don't leave and start looking for random discounts and flight sales. Let's try to avoid getting scammed or booking an expensive ticket.

Take a moment to read our guide here to learn how to save money flying:

Use a VPN

Some people might tell you to use your browser's incognito mode when searching for flights. This is to help ward off the possibility of website cookies tracking your activities and showcasing more expensive tickets.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always work. Even when in incognito, some websites might still force you to enable cookies. You can't hide from everyone and they'll still identify you through your network IP address.

Instead, use a VPN tool. These give you a private virtual network and can encrypt your data, giving you full privacy. This is more effective than simply going incognito and it guarantees that the low prices you see on each search are genuine.

Destination as a Layover

Did you know that you can get a cheaper flight if your destination is the layover/stop-over point?

Say you want to go from Manchester to Hawaii. Instead of booking a straight flight to Hawaii, book one that heads to Los Angeles but takes a quick layover stop at Hawaii. Get off the plane once it reaches Hawaii and skip the trip to Los Angeles.

This can result in cheaper flights. Remember: the folks buying tickets for this flight want to go to Los Angeles, not Hawaii. They're the prime target.

However, you have to make sure that the airline you book for allows passengers to get off the plane at layover spots.

Book on Specific Days

There is a popular belief that you can get cheaper flights if you book on a Tuesday. That's not always true. However, you might get a cheaper flight if it's set on a Tuesday.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are the usual suspects for cheaper flights because fewer people want to travel on those days of the week. A part of this is due to the fact that people believe in the aforementioned tall tale, while others don't like these days due to busy work schedules.

Get Red-Eye Flights

This tip to save money on flights shares a similar philosophy with booking flights on Tuesdays. Few people like travelling at night and airlines drop flight ticket prices to quickly fill up the seats.

Not familiar with the term? Red-eye flights refer to those scheduled between 9 PM and 6 AM. People refer to them this way because you have to stay awake during the night during these flights, for boarding and transfers.

If you want the cheapest red-eye flights, search for ones departing between midnight and 3 AM. Most people prefer to sleep at those hours. Drink some coffee and prepare for a long night, but you'll at least be able to shave off some expenses with a cheaper ticket.

Use Rewards Cards Frequently

Did you know UK residents took over 71 million trips in 2018 alone? People love to travel, whether it's for work or vacation, and you should take advantage of this too! Fortunately, this isn't too difficult to achieve with rewards credit cards.

Rewards cards give you points each time you use that card to pay for a flight or hotel stay. Earn enough points and you could use them for a free flight or stay in a hotel.

Not all of these cards are worth your time, though. Some require a ridiculous amount of points before you can redeem them for a decent flight. Others have incredibly high annual fees.

Make sure you read the finer details before you sign up for one.

Book 47 Days Ahead of Time

One of the most common tips to save cash on flights is to book early. How early is early enough, though? Do you book a week before or a year before?

One report concluded that the best time to book a flight is exactly 47 days before your intended date of departure. The report continued to claim that doing so can save you as much as 163.35 GBP (roughly $201). If you can't book 47 days prior, the report states you can still save by booking between one and four months early.

Use Deal Sites
