Online retailer Overstock has sold brand-name merchandise and services at discounted prices since 1999. Everything from bedding to insurance.
Based in Utah, USA, Overstock.com ships to 200+ countries, and boasts an A+ rating from the BBB (Better Business Bureau). In May 2019 it added another award to its already impressive list: its second consecutive Appy Award for Best Retail App.
But it seems that Overstock's customer complaints are on the rise as reflected on the BBB site itself.
This begs the question: Is Overstock legit? Read our Overstock review below.
Overstock's website ticks all the boxes attesting to its legality. It is even GDPR compliant, which is not always the case with USA-based online shops. Its "Disclaimers of Warranty and Limitations of Liability" clause in its Terms and Conditions read no differently to any other big-name online shops.
The website has a clean look and feel, and it is easy to navigate. Overstock has all the main social media platforms covered and its Help Center page is well organised. Any online shopper will soon realise the Overstock's Standard Return Policy differs slightly for international and US customers.
We looked at a few review sights and came to the conclusion that Overstock's stumbling block is in the returns department. Any online shop knows that returns are part of the e-commerce landscape. Being customer-friendly when it comes to returns is one sure way to get a good reputation.
This is not the case with Overstock if independent review sites like ConsumerAffairs can be taken at face value. There is a high preponderance of negative reviews on sitejabber too. We read through screeds of comments, some of which were positive, it has to be said.
The angriest complaints seemed to share something in common. Most of the unhappy customers experienced problems when it came to returning goods, for whatever reasons.
Most complaints about Overstock's returns process highlighted a huge disconnect between what Overstock's return policy states and what the customer's actual experience was when attempting to return a purchase.
As our BuyVia FAQ says, we encourage customer feedback and have a dedicated page on our site for this. We take your feedback seriously.
We communicate our own transparency and reputation for fairness on our website. We always aim to get consumers the best deals. If we recommend deals for you that leave you less than satisfied, we need to know about it.
Customer reviews are an important barometer of any online retailer's overall quality. Just as we urge customers to give us feedback, it is also helpful when you write your own review on any online retailer on other review sites.
And the verdict on whether Overstock is legit? Let's just say that the jury's still out on this one.
Proving illegitimacy of any operation is a tricky business. There is no evidence that Overstock is not legit; it simply has a rather high proportion of customers who have been unhappy about the returns process. We hope that this Overstock review has been helpful.
As a platform offering UK coupons and product discounts, all we can do is recommend that you purchase online with caution. And read the online retailer's returns policy before you buy!
But then, we would give you that advice for dealings with any platform engaged in similar activities related to e-commerce.
